Recently I was challenged to a game-of-life-off competition. The result was
http://jacekk.co.uk/scripts/life.html The code for this can be seen in the page source since its all in JavaScript. The challenge was to get a working version as fast as possible so there are no fancy optimisations.
It's a nice challenge and worth trying if you have a spare hour
