mail from localhost

Could you make a tutorial about sending email from localhost? What I mean is not focusing on mail() function and the php code, but how to set xampp (which I use) or other platforms, etc etc..

Probably not something I will cover just because of the large number of different ways you can have your local server set up. Plus a lot of the time ISPs will block the mail anyway.
