I would recoment DynMap, it makes a cool map. Example -> http://mc.somethingcraft.co.uk:8123/

If you breaka block within a tile of the map that tile is regenerated.
To render the entire thing took about 4 hours the first time, you may have noticed the forum was a bit slow a few weeks ago

I was more thinking that you could see players walking around and building stuff in real time

It doesn't render players as part of the image, they are rendered on top using some clever coordinates thing.
