Captcha @Jacek

Post by conradk »

Hey Jacek,

Could you please consider adding a captcha system on the registration of this forum, or for posts by new members ? Cuz it's kind of a pity to see new spam messages every single day :( I can't wait for XHBB, but until then, please consider adding some more defense. This is ruinning the quality of this forum IMO :/

Best regards,
CK

I know ! there is nothing I can do though.

There is a captcha required for registration, these spammers are either real people, or very clever bots.

Oh, damn :( Damn phpBB. I can't believe this system is so much used around the internet... this is just unbelievable. Anyways, we won't leave you even with the spam :P Don't stop working on XHBB though :P

Perhaps some more people should be moderators temporarily.

anyone interested in doing that ?

XHBB is getting close to being usable. There are now some basic moderator features, so hopefully we can move to that soon and everythign will be better. Except all of the broken things, they will be a lot worse !

I could give it a shot. I'm sort of busy for the rest of this week, but by Friday I should be having enough free time to be here more actively again :)

Actually, I'm on vacation right now so I'm here pretty much always. If you need a mod, I'd be available ;) Your call.

I think I will add a new group "Spam Removal" and add a few people to that.

Also phpBB needs updating

This will all have to wait until tomorrow though as it's 01:40 now and I'm very tired !

I'm down with that. Sign me up! ;)

And what's the captcha for sign up? I forget…
reCAPTCHA is the way to go, IMHO. Just take a look at my guestbook database and see why!

It is reCaptcha :? As far as I know that is the best one to use too, apparently it's not unbreakable though.

I may see if I can add a stopforumspam check to the registration, that should help with the most obvious spam.

Yeah there are tons of bots who can crack captcha's. Best choice is making a custom one (they would have to update their scripts, which is not worth it for one forum). Or using hidden forms: http://robmalon.com/hidden-form-fields- ... -bot-spam/

Last one worked great for me :-)

That makes sense, if the spam bots are designed for phpbb and I change the registration form in some way, they will stop working. Even renaming the input fields should do it.

The problem is, I didn't write phpbb, so even the smallest change takes about 4 hours !

Okay, I am about to delete that list of usernames. If you are on it you will have to register again.

A spam just got posted by a bot that registered on the 11th.
