Combining between the login/profile tutorial

Hey guys,
I've basically been through the register/login tutorial and the profile tutorial, and both are working. However, both of the tutorials aren't interlinked so i'm a little confused about the best way to link them. I'm guessing I need to set the uid as a session variable but just not sure how to go about it considering I have two separate tables etc.
I'd appreciate any help.
