Recent Spam Issue

I'm sure you have all noticed that recently the level of spam on the forum has increased to a level where is can be hard to see the topics that are not spam posts. while removing these posts is easy enough, I am not online all of the time.
So, I have added a stopforumspam.com check to the registration page, hopefully this massive blacklist approach will prove to be effective. If the IP or email address of the registering user is found on the blacklist they are not allowed to register.
To test out how well this method works, I have also disabled the captcha for registrations, which may have been a mistake but we will see. I will stay online for a lot of today, but sign out, because apparently bots wait until there are no mods online sometimes.
Lets hope this works

Great
Hopefully it will work. Remember there are dedicated members ready to act as anti-spam bots

Yes and you quoted the entire thing !
Rather disappointingly, most of the members are spammers

I had a feeling I'd get a complaint on that. But no mention of the beard?!

There is nothing in the rules about that

But we are not
Of course it takes time to build up a member base. Maybe you should advertise your forum a little more on your videos. Like add an intro or outro with the links. Say that if we have questions, we can visit the forum, etc.
I came on this forum because I saw you advertise it on PHP Academy. If you advertise a little, people will come
Also, either get XHBB out
or customise the current theme at least a very little bit. For instance, don't let the phpBB logo at the top. If someone visits the forum, they light think they have landed on the wrong page and leave :s

I do occasionally say that

Far too lazy to do that !

I know it looks pretty bad, but I was planning to leave it until I get the custom forum thing working.
I'm not that interested in the number of users, currently it's pretty easy to reply to all the posts which is nice. I was actually expecting there to be about 10% of activity that there has been so overall it's going well.
On an unrelated note, I'm not sure if anybody noticed the bug with the syntax highlighting mod that broke the page after three code blocks, but it is fixed now and was caused by the update to 3.0.9. If you do see it CTRL + F5

from my experience running many forums, PHPBB is the worst for spam simply because its the most used.
blocking IP's is bad as most of them are using stolen IP's or proxys non of them (well hopefully most of them) are not stupid enough to use there own IP.
The most effective thing by far is to place a question on the reg page I.E 2+4 = this cut spam on my board to almost zero!

I saw this as a spam question suggested on a forum once
Ignore the text and enter the coloured letters 2 + 4 = ?
Seems pretty clever.

Ever if you were you would still be able to see that it was different.
It is a bit hard to see on the forum actually, in the actual question it was a lot clearer.

Depends on how color blind you are.

Maybe underlining would be better
Hopefully we won't get any more spams here now with the registration check added.

I've seen no spam in the past two days. Is that a good sign ?

On an unrelated note, but may be a useful feature.
When people register you create a little image with their email address in it (so that it isnt textual and less spam bots can read it)
So if people ask a question, or want to be contacted directly they can just add this image and it will display their email address without it being exposed to spam?
maybe a little button to add it in, like we have for javascript and SQL etc

There was one, but it was from a user that had already registered. I might have the registration page log failed registrations so I can see how many people are being rejected by the spam check. I guess it would be a lot with no captcha

No idea how I would add that to phpbb but I can easily do it as a mod for my forum. It could even be auto processed like URLs are on here pretty easily.

Its easy to use.. because everyone uses it, but mods are a nightmare!
