I feel as though a "thanks" counter kind of thing will be more useful then a reputation system.

People rep-up for posts totally unrelated to help, and it becomes much more of a competition than it needs to be. I am not anti-them, I just feel they are a silly thing to rely on to see if someone is helpful, or trusted or what have you.

If I somehow make the system a bit secret it will stop people saying "please say thanks" and other daft stuff too

Yah. The peoples signatures which are like "Please rep up!" or posts to that extent make me want to rep down
