Activation Code System!

First I would just like to say hi, this is my first time on this forum. Second of all down to my question. I need some help, I run a Minecraft Server and I want to make a donation system where a user will come onto my site, built using php and twitter bootstrap and chose what donation package they want to buy and then buy it through paypal. They will then get sent a activation code in an email and then they will go onto their profile page on this site and type it in and they will get the prizes for 30 days. I have figured out how to do it apart from the activation codes. Would I create a sql database which hosts all the codes and how would I make this actiavation system in php?

There are a few paypal IPN tutorials on youtube. You could follow one of those and when you have the basics you try from there.

I have been meaning to do a tutorial using the IPN and this sounds like quite a cool use of it so I might actually do this. No time soon though.
