I never use more or recommend to use more than 99x99. It's more than enough in my opinion

Im currently messing around in 3D design, and everything there is done in multiples of 8, to make things easier.. So that is just habbit for me atm i guess

They use a default avatar of 150x150px.

I just noticed, about the pixelation thingy, I think I was talking about facebook's 180x180 minimum size :O
