What would you want from a free host ?
What would you want from a free host ?
So I am thinking of finally finishing my hosting platform over the holiday and upgrading to the mega server.
Meaning I could offer web hosting, in the interest of making it good.. .what would like to see from a free host ?
The way it works at the moment is that you register a free account, which can use limited resources. Then you can buy extra things to add-on to your account if needed, like 10GB of disk space for an extra amount per month. Which I went for because it is more flexible than having to use a set package.
Also, who would want to use it ?

Re: What would you want from a free host ?
between 500-1000MB disk space, unlimited email accounts and MySQL databases (that fit within the data range)
unlimited bandwidth (I know that OVH has 3TB allowance and £15/tb, soits cheap upgrade if needed )

Re: What would you want from a free host ?
it comes with 3TB by default, and is incredibly cheap to purchase another TB, so to me it doesnt look too unreasonable to offer unlimited as I can't see anybody using more than maybe 5GB / month on this as is anyway

Nothing will be unlimited, because ... well because nothing is unlimited

Hmm, well i guess you could be generous and have it setup as like..
14TB / number of customers

But then it will reduce for every new user...
Also not okay
Also not okay
Re: What would you want from a free host ?
i'd say 10+ emails, multiple MySQL users with 15+ databases, and lots of memory
and i'd use it if it means that i get ^that, and i can transfer my database information to your server w/o having slow connection
probably still wouldn't though…

Re: What would you want from a free host ?
I was hoping for comments on the platform, not the resource limits
You could so that.JelvinJS7 wrote:and i'd use it if it means that i get ^that, and i can transfer my database information to your server w/o having slow connection
Re: What would you want from a free host ?
oh. well… if this answers that, then i say allow multiple types of databases (as in, more than just MySQL), PMA, the ability to edit the ini file, and both ASP and PHP supportJacek wrote:I was hoping for comments on the platform, not the resource limits
Re: What would you want from a free host ?
Would just be bloat on the server, what's wrong with mysql ?JelvinJS7 wrote:multiple types of databases (as in, more than just MySQL),
Awkward to implement, Enough things can be set with ini_set. Plus I would have it setup correctly so you would not need to editJelvinJS7 wrote: the ability to edit the ini fil
Just no.JelvinJS7 wrote:and both ASP and PHP support
I did not say I would listen
Re: What would you want from a free host ?
Speaking on free host, what would you say is a good host, I am using justhost which gives you unlimited of everything and anything and works great.

Well, I am looking for suggestions, yours were useful in that I know people expect a lot more than I can reasonably offerJelvinJS7 wrote:making us feel helpful when we really aren't?
Still interested as to why you want more DB server though ? I'm open to this if there is a reason that would apply to a few people
I would say a good host would be one that does not offer unlimited everything (because it is never unlimited) and it just honest with the customers. I would also say one that does not cram the platform with as many features as they can just to make the features list on the homepage as long as possible to look like they offer more than the competition, instead they would offer a solid setup of the stuff that is actually used.pasqo83 wrote:what would you say is a good host

some people might not like MySQLwide_load wrote: Still interested as to why you want more DB server though ? I'm open to this if there is a reason that would apply to a few people

It's all I have ever used, but as far as I know SQL syntax is pretty much the same for all servers.JelvinJS7 wrote:some people might not like MySQL
What would you prefer to use ?

Re: What would you want from a free host ?
I would always have the latest php version.JelvinJS7 wrote:oh. didn't even think about version #…
PHP4 would cause excessive server load
Thinking about it, this whole hosting idea is probably not the best idea
Here I was thinking people would be happy with a host that was actually fast

It sure would make me happy. I'm not sure if I'd be willing to move my stuff, but having the speed would be nice. Plus, I would not complain like everyone else.jacek wrote:I would always have the latest php version.JelvinJS7 wrote:oh. didn't even think about version #…
