I can answer that :)

I use ffmpeg which is a command line tool, basically this guide http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1392026

Although to make it a bit easier to use I made a GUI interface with php-gtk.

For windows, I have no idea what is good, but I am sure someone here will :D

Camtasia Studio is a great tool to use. It's kind of pricey though :)

Lucky for me we also need this for various school projects, so I got it for free!

Of course there are always... other free alternatives to my solution

Well, as I said, there are ways to sort of get around having to pay ;)

If you didn't get that hint, don't bother.

Camtasia does have a free version. Works just like the paid version but with a logo on top of the screen. A little Windows Movie Maker magic and that logo is gone.

You can use the hypercam 2 (to record the screen) with some codecs such as:
- Xvid
- DivX

I personally prefer DivX, but that also costs (not too much). As for Xvid, I believe it's free and I heard just as good. You will have to configure the settings in hypercam to use the codec.

If you just want a high detail editor, I use Sony Vegas which is worth A LOT, but you can get away with using movie maker, but you can't configure the quality very good. Camtasia is a screen recorder and editor, and that is all good. But like Tino said, there is always a way to get it for free ;)

Everyone knows where to pirate software, discussion of such things is not allowed on the forum.

Any links would have gotten people warnings.

Sorry to be a pain ;)

I used to use camtasia and Captivate.

Loved Captivate, but being adobe.. it had too many features that i couldn't make use of (I made youtube tutorials) and they didnt allow interactive tutorial so I gave up on captivate.
