Popup login

I'm not quite sure as to where I should post this question.

I want to have a " Popup " login screen, where you click a button and a small box pops up to the top right of the page ( like a drop-down menu kinda thing ) containing the login form, and when you press login it closes the window and either logs you in or shows the error-messages.

How would I go about doing this? ( I'm a complete rookie in everything JavaScript related, and I'm fairly new to CSS. )
